The Banner of St. Peter's.
representative of Morro Rock, a prominent local geological feature. Peter was named in the Gospels as "The Rock", the cornerstone of the Church. The Greek word for "Peter" is also the Greek word for "rock". The crossed keys signify that St. Peter was thought to have the keys to heaven. The upside down cross is to remind us that when Peter was crucified it is said he insisted on being crucified upside down, considering himself not worthy to die in the same position as did Jesus. |
